LOMBOK ISLAND SCUBA DIVE INFORMATION

Lombok has so many beaches and small islands, Lombok offer a myriad of diving and snorkelling opportunities. The best known locations are arround the Gili islands Gili Air, Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan and some Dive sites at south Lombok.

The underwater world around Indonesia is a diver’s paradise. Nearly a quarter of the world’s reefs are found in here and there are over 3,500 species living on them. The clarity of the water combined with the rich marine life makes this a photographer’s heaven, especially for those who enjoy taking macro shots. Common destinations to visit for diving are, amongst others, Bali, Lombok and Sulawesi.

Lombok offer scuba diving at all levels of diver are catered for, from the absolute beginner to the most adventurous. The main diving area arround the Gili island lie in the north west coast of Lombok.

There are more than 15 dive sites around the islands and more reefs are being explored all of the time. Most sites are suitable for beginners, but there are some that are more challenging for advanced divers. Some of the dive sites are shore dives, others have to be reached by boat. Snorkelling is also good around the three islands.

Lombok and Gili Island Diving Features:

Water temperature: This depends on your dive location because there are many cold currents and up wellings. However, expect a temperature range of about 23°C (73°F) to 29°C (84°F)

North Coast Gili ilsand Dive Sites

Shark Point & Volker’s Golf course
Shark Point east of Gili Trawangan is a popular dive spot in the mornings. This dive site consists of different levels (24m, 20m, 18m); it starts with a slope out of hard and soft corals, the "native country" of green and hawksbill turtles. The different levels are sandy areas with small coral blocks – a wide variety of marine life starting with schools of trivially, napoleon fish over white tip reef sharks and rays in the sandy areas….
ending up with ribbon eels, leaf fishes and even mantas. “Volker’s' Golf course” is about 500m east of Shark point and starts at a depth of about 30m. It looks like the greens of a golf course and is the best site to see sharks, schools of mackerels and doctor fishes. Because of its depth and the sometimes very strong currents, it is a dive for advanced divers.
Meno Wall
Meno Wall in the West of Gili Meno goes down to 18m. You can see a lot of small coral fish like lionfish, soldier fish, gobies, crabs and a lot of wart slugs and nudi branches coming out of hiding. It is also called “Turtle Heaven” because of the many resident hawksbill and green turtles.

Air Wall
Air Wall in the West of Gili Air is a very beautiful wall that, due to the soft coral cover, shines yellow-orange depending on the position of the sun. The highlight of this wall is a coral block at 22m in which leaf fishes (scorpion fish) found their "home", surrounded by shrimps, pipefish, white-banded cleaner shrimps and thousands of glass fishes... Look out into the deeper parts for white tip reef sharks.
Coral Fan Garden & Basket Coral Garden
Also popular for morning dives are the two dive spots in the North of Gili Trawangan, Coral Fan Garden and Basket Coral Garden. The first few meters you will have the feeling of being in an aquarium - schools of colored fairy bass lets, fusiliers, banner fishes… and deeper, around the big coral and stone blocks, groupers, batfish, trumpet fish, hiding octopus and bearded scorpion fish. Look out to the blue: sometimes eagle rays, mantas or reef sharks can be seen.

Frog Fish Point
One of our favorite dive spots is Frog Fish Point in the East of Gili Air, famous for small things and rarities. A huge coral block from 5m-18m welcomes you. There are a lot of sandy areas, where the garden eels let off steam and coral is overgrown with anemones and their clownfish. You can find ghost pipefish, frogfish and a lot of scorpion fish. Have a manicure there by one of the many cleaner shrimps.
Manta Point in the rainy season, when the water is rich with plankton, this dive site in the South of Gili Trawangan gives you the best chance to see Manta rays. But even without mantas, you still have a good chance to see reef sharks and turtles. Malang Reef Underwater canyons create the landscape here with a plateau starting at 10m and dropping down to 40m. Here you can see “everything”. Mantas, blue spotted stingrays, scorpion fish, lionfish, and white tips have been encountered here as well as spiny lobsters.

Hammerhead sharks
Dive with us at our recently discovered dive sites in the South. Schools of barracudas, tunas, mackerels and different kind of sharks (also hammerheads!), manta rays, eagle rays…. And all the coral is in 100% pristine condition. Real world-class diving!

The Magnet
A pinnacle in the open sea, rising up to the surface from a depth of around 80m. Big, big fish action. Everywhere schools of mackerel, rainbow runner, tuna and barracuda. Here you can see white tips, black tips, grey reef sharks and with a little luck schooling hammerhead sharks. For advanced divers only.

The Skull
This pinnacle rises up from a depth of around 40m and is completely covered with soft corals. Here too, big fish action. White tips, black tips, and mackerels, grey reef sharks, many stingrays and schooling tunas.

The Cathedral
Another pinnacle going down to around 50m. Here many sharks, tunas, mackerels and barracudas can be found. We have seen a school of eagle rays here. At around 40m there is a big cave. For advanced divers only.

Soft Coral Garden
A chain of small pinnacles beginning in a depth of around 25m. All pinnacles are covered completely with soft coral. It is normally more a spot for small fishes and coral, but even here we have encountered manta rays.

Boulder City Starting
At a vertical wall you descend to about 30 meters. There are a lot of big rocks forming hundreds of swim-troughs. Sharks, napoleons and many, many sweet lips and angelfishes have been seen here.
Dive Sites Around Senggigi
Senggigi Dive is a spectacular slope reaching down to 60m. Between 10m and 25m, there is an array of wonderful coral. A lot of different reef fishes and with a bit of luck you can see turtles and white tip reef sharks. Hidden between the coral many different kinds of shrimp and crab can be found.

Nipah Slope
A spectacular slope reaching down to 60m. Between 10m and 25m, there is an array of wonderful corals. A lot of different reef fishes and with a bit of luck you can see turtles and white tip reef sharks. Hidden between the corals many different kinds of shrimp and crab can be found.

Malimbu Cave
A slope going down from 10m to 15m with big sandy patches and rocks covered in corals. Here you can find a lot of sting rays, a big amount of reef fishes and often turtles. In the shallower part are caves that can only be dived when conditions are calm. But be careful, we’ve heard a dragon lives there…

Malimbu Slope
A long, stretched slope that goes down to 30m. The bottom is sandy with a lot of little coral reefs. Sharks, blue spotted rays, eagle rays, barracudas, leaf fish – there’s just so much to see.

Shark Point
A big plateau that starts at 10m and goes down to 30m or 40m. Most of the time, you can see sharks, turtles and a big variety of reef fish. On the north side, big gorgonians and sponges can be found.

Alang-Alang Wall
A wall that begins at 16m and reaches down to 35m. Down there, after a small plateau begins another wall that goes down to 60m. Both of them are over grown with wonderful corals. You have sharks, turtles and a huge variety of reef fish. It’s a perfect spot for night dives.

Senggigi Reef - Sengiggi Beach Right and Left Hander
Situated in the west coast of Lombok, 20 minnutes drive from Lombok international ariport, this region is the main resort area on the island of Lombok. It's has quite unique and famous for its right and left break. Senggigi is more fickle than the south coast, having to draw the swell from Lombok straight, but when it's on, it's on and has deep tube rights, and a fast moving left with a fast bowl section

Alang Alang Point
Heading north from Senggigi beach, there are Alang Alang Point and some other interesting breaks in larger swell along the north Western coast. Completing the surfing sojourn, is the GIli islands, Trawangan, Meno , Air, offering some excelent waves at times.
South Lombok Surf breaks [ Kuta Lombok Area ]
Are Guling
2 breaks - a hollow shifty left, best at mid to High tide A nice right with a fast inside section, best at low to Mid tide Has reasonable protection from the wind. Transport: 20 minutes drive and a 20-minute walk or just 20 minutes by boat from Kuta Beach.

Belongas
This is a fairly typical Indo reef break. Nice and consistent with powerful long rides when the swell picks up. Sensitive to winds. It's better during the raining season with NE winds.
Two main peaks:
The right: good peaky right on the west side. Can be powerful.
The left: at the east side of the bay. Rarely works.

Selong Belanak
West of Mawub Beach, Selong Belanak is situated in a bay between two rugged mounts. Its offer great views and opportunities for surfing, swimming and fishing.

Mawun Beach
To the west of Kuta, this sheltered beach is located between two hils offering spectacular views and pristine white sand.

Grupuk Beach
The protected cove of grupuk beach provides the perfect place for relaxation, swimming in its calm blue water. Especially for the surfer who want to enjoy the dessert point have to take a outrigger boat (traditional boat) to the breaks of the desset point.

Seger Beach

Even in the midst of the wet season temperatures range from 21 degrees Celsius (70½F) to 33 degrees Celsius (90½F), except at higher altitudes which can be much cooler. The heaviest rainfalls are usually recorded in December and January. Average humidity is generally between 75% and 100%.
AIRPORT TAX
When leaving Indonesia you must to pay airport taxes IDR 75.000 - IDR 150.000 for international flight and IDR 30.000 - IDR 50.000 for domestic flight.

Electricity & Water
Indonesia runs 127V AC/50Hz but is in the process of converting to a 230V AC/50Hz. This conversion is complete in principal cities. Indonesia uses a type C, F, and G plug so North Americans traveling with electronics will need adapters.
It is not advisable to drink tap water in Indonesia, but bottled mineral water is safe and available everywhere. Ice in drinks is generally OK in good standard hotels and restaurants but it is best to avoid it on street stalls or in country areas.

Clothing
With temperatures ranging between 20-35½oC, light, casual clothes are the most practical. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are the most comfortable in Indonesia's often humid conditions. Casual clothes are acceptable in most places and a lightweight suit and tie are usual for business or formal meetings. Light cotton dresses are generally acceptable in most situations. Batik is popular for both men's shirts and women's dresses.

Lombok General Information.

Lombok is an island in the West Nusa Tenggara Province (Nusa Tenggara Barat) and its located between Bali and Sumbawa island in the eastern part of Indonesia. Mataram is the administrative capital and its the larger city on the island and has about 2.500.000 in habitants. The Population in Lombok is about 3,5 million, and majority 91% are Moslem. Hindus make up about 6% while Christians and Buddhist about 3%.

Lombok Climate
The climate is perfect with annual temperatures ranging between 21° C - 33° C. it has only two seasons dry and Wet, Dry season from May to October and Wet From November to April.
Lombok Geography
Lombok lies 8 degrees south of the equator and stretches some 80km east to west and about the same distance north to south. It is dominated by the second highest mountain in Indonesia, GUNUNG RINJANI, which soars to 3726m. It has a large caldera with a Crater Lake, Segara Anak, 600m below the rim, and a new volcanic cone which has formed in the center. Rinjani last erupted in 1994, and evidence of this can be seen in the fresh lava and yellow sulfur around the inner cone. Central Lombok, to the south of Rinjani, is similar to Bali with rich alluvial plains and fields irrigated by water flowing from the mountains. In the far south and east it is drier, with scrubby, barren hills. This area gets little rain and often has droughts which can last for months. In recent years, several dams have been built, so the abundant rain-fall of the wet season can be retained for irrigation throughout the year.
Lombok People and Religion
Lombok (population 2,950,105 in 2005) is an island in West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. It is part of the chain of the Lesser Sunda Islands, with the Lombok Strait separating it from Bali to the west and the Alas Strait between it and Sumbawa to the east. It is roughly circular, with a "tail" to the southwest, about 70 km across and a total area of about 4,725 km² (1,825 sq mi). The administrative capital and largest city on the island is Mataram.
Lombok History
The Dutch first visited Lombok in 1674 and settled the eastern most part of the island, leaving the western half to be ruled by a Hindu dynasty from Bali. The Sasaks chafed under Balinese rule, and a revolt in 1891 ended in 1894 with the annexation of the entire island to the Netherlands East Indies.
Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani
The Lombok Strait marks the passage of the biogeographically division between the fauna of the Indomalayan ecozone and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia that is known as the Wallace Line, for Alfred Russel Wallace, who first remarked upon the distinction between these two major biomes.
The island's topography is dominated by the centrally-located strato volcano Mount Rinjani, which rises to 3,726 m (12,224 ft), making it the third-highest in Indonesia. The most recent eruption of Rinjani was in June-July, 1994. The volcano, and its sacred crater lake, 'Segara Anak' (child of the sea), are protected by a National Park established in 1997. The southern part of the island is a fertile plain where corn, rice, coffee, tobacco, and cotton are grown.
The island's inhabitants are 85% Sasak (a people, related to the Balinese, but mostly practising Islam), 10-15% Balinese, with the small remainder being Chinese, Arab, Javanese, and Sumbawanese.
Lombok Economy and politics
Lombok has much in common with nearby Bali, but less well-known and less-visited by foreigners. It has been working to increase its visibility to tourists in recent years, promoting itself as an "unspoiled Bali". The most-developed center of tourism is Senggigi, spread in a 10-kilometer strip along the coastal road north of Mataram, while backpackers congregate in the Gili Islands off the west coast. Other popular tourist destinations include Kuta (distinctly different from Kuta, Bali) where surfing is considered some of the best in the world by leading surfing magazines. The Kuta area is also famous for its beautiful, untouched beaches.
While the area may be considered economically depressed by First World standards, the island is fertile, has sufficient rainfall in most areas for agriculture, and possesses a variety of climate zones. Consequently, food in abundant quantity and variety is available inexpensively at local farmer's markets. A family of 4 can eat rice, vegetables, and fruit for as little as US$0.50. Even though a family income may be as small as US$5.00 per day from fishing or farming, many families are able to live a happy and productive live on astonishingly small incomes.
In early 2000 thousands fled from religious and ethnic violence that swept over the island, and tensions remain. Some travel websites warn that tourists sometimes provoke anger in this economically depressed region. This warning lacks credibility, since all of Lombok has had a long history of welcoming visitors to the island. Both the government and many of the residents recognize that tourism and the services required by tourists is Lombok's highest source of income. Further proof of the island's hospitality is show by the fact that tourists are virtually never seriously injured by any interaction with the local population. While many of the local population are friendly, there is certainly an element of danger and numerous travelers have shared accounts of violence, particularly in the Kuta region where locals, displaced by hotel projects, resent foreign presence. There is also a refugee camp on the island, costs paid for by Australia, which holds mostly Hazara Afghans who have tried to enter Australia by boat.
Money and Local Currencies
When changing money there are many money changers in Lombok. The best rates are usually in Senggigi. Money changers prefer new, clean large bills and will accept smaller denominations at a lower rate. If you have traveler’s checks the rate will be less than bank notes. Be sure to count your money before you leave money changers. You can also check local banks but the rate is slightly lower than outside. Re-count the money in front of the money changer reception is a must, as usually there's a quick tricky way how they can steal your money. A suggestion when changing money. If you plan on making small purchases be sure to carry small denominations with you because many sellers do not have change. The Rupiah come in denominations of 100.000, 50.000, 10.000, 5.000, 1.000, 500, and 100.

Indonesian work in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. If you need to visit a government office, arrive between 08 AM and 11:30 AM. This also apply to banks and private businesses. Government offices close early on Fridays and Saturdays. Generally offices are open 07:30AM - 3 PM Monday - Thursday, 07:00AM - noon on Friday, banks are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Health and Medical Info
Most hotels have on call doctors. For what it is known by Australian as "Bali Belly", Lomotil and Imodium eliminate Symptoms, but not infections. A fever along with the symptoms requires doctor prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much as liquid as possible. For discomfort, diarrhea, and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy food. Drink only bottled water or boiled water (air putih).
